New to First Presbyterian?
Where to Park?
The main church door on Tazewell Street offers easy, barrier-free access to the sanctuary. There is limited parking there on Tazewell. You may also park along the curb on Duhring Street or in the Duhring Street parking lot. Those who park on the Duhring Street may enter the side door to the building (under the awning), go up one flight of stairs, and enter the hallway to the sanctuary through the door on the right.
Sunday in the Sanctuary
Eleven a.m. Sunday worship at First Presbyterian is traditional and follows reformed theology, but incorporates numerous contemporary elements: inclusion of adults and children as lay leaders in worship, guest vocalists and instrumentalists, fresh approaches to the sermon, weekly children’s message, and occasional use of drama, character monologue, and dramatic readings. The church has a heritage of excellent music, and we are blessed to have two very capable pianists and an excellent organist/Director of Music.
The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper is celebrated six or more times per year. All who trust in Jesus Christ are invited to the communion table.
There is no “dress code” at First Presbyterian. Most worshipers wear “business casual,” but you will see all styles of clothing. In summer, the sanctuary is air conditioned for your comfort.
Our nursery is staffed with a trained attendant who is assisted each week by a church member. Parents attending adult Sunday School may drop off their infants and toddlers beginning at 9:30 a.m. Children age 4 and up are invited to attend the Children’s Sunday School class next door to the nursery.
During the 11:00 am worship service, children through age 6 are welcome in the nursery; however, parents are encouraged to keep their kindergarten and older youngsters in the sanctuary through the Children’s Message – and longer when the child is ready. Activity bags for children to use during the worship service may be picked up in the narthex on your way in.
